OUR WEEKEND GETAWAY TO MAYO

January 29, 2018

Hi guys,

I hope January is going ok for you all. It’s never an easy month, so whatever you can do to make yourself feel better this month do it! Go easy on yourself: take a bath, treat yourself to some chocolate, and make some nice cosy plans with your friends.  January is hard enough without totally depriving yourself of all the lovely things we’re used to at Christmas.

With this in mind, I had planned a weekend away to the Lodge at Ashford Castle. We didn’t do proper Christmas presents this year instead we set a budget of €20, so we could spend our money on doing things together instead. We booked Coachella in April (a music festival based in California) which I’m very excited for, but it’s nice to get away even for a night in Ireland as well. We often take it for granted because it’s on our doorstep, but after working in Tourism Ireland for years, if anyone knows how amazing Ireland is, its me. And I plan on taking more advantage of that this year.

The Lodge is based on the estate of Ashford Castle, about a ten min walk or 2/3 min drive from the Castle itself. It’s modern, cosy, bright and calm. We had a superior deluxe room which was really spacious, clean and comfortable.

The first thing we did after arriving was head straight for a walk in the gorgeous gardens. We saw the falconry school, and where you could go horse riding, not to mention the beautiful Castle. After this we got a lift from one of the estates Range Rovers back up to the lodge (how amazing is that!) and had lunch in the Quay bar.

Later that evening we went for dinner in Cullen’s Cottage and had a serious Netflix Binge of Marcella – it’s a good one if you’re into crime/thrillers!

One good thing to note, if you do plan to head down to the lodge and want to visit the castle you will have to book a reservation in advance. I’ve heard they do a fabulous afternoon tea – I’ll have to come back some day to try it.

Also, Ashford Castle is based in the cute little town of Cong, where the movie ‘The Quiet Man’ was filmed. It’s so peaceful, there’s lovely cafes (Puddleducks has amazing lunch options) and just really nice to walk around if you are looking for something to do some weekend in Ireland 😊

I filmed a YouTube video over the weekend too, if you fancy seeing and hearing more you can watch it here,

Anyway that’s all for now, I’ll be back tomorrow with a new “On My Mind” post,

Lou x

Disclaimer: A big thanks to the lodge at Ashford Castle for inviting me down – they covered the room, but all milage, meals, drinks and additional costs I paid for. All thoughts are my own as well 😊

It really was somewhere I had been dying to visit for a long time.
